Debunking the myth: Young Adults Do Care About Online Privacy

Contrary to popular claim that young people “are less concerned with maintaining privacy than older people are", a UC Berkley study found "that large percentages of young adults (those 18-24 years) are in harmony with older Americans regarding concerns about online privacy, norms, and policy suggestions. In several cases, there are no statistically significant differences between young adults and older age categories on these topics.

Follow-up On a Tune In: WTKF's View Point with Lockwood Phillips

Lockwood Phillips, of WTKF radio, interviewed Safe Internet Alliance's president Linda Criddle on teen's and twentysomething's use of the internet. Mentioning his own sons, Lockwood asked if the declaration that youth today don't care about privacy was true, or if this was industry hype perpetuating the idea that sharing everything about oneself is the new norm.

Follow-up On a Tune In: KHAI Popoff with Mary Jane Popp

Mary Jane Popp, of KHAI radio, interviewed Safe Internet Alliance's president Linda Criddle on what it takes to implement internet hygiene, and how to apply common sense when online. Mary Jane asked if it is just laziness on the part of consumers that gets them into trouble with scams and malware, and what the key actions consumers should be taking to protect themselves. Linda answered by saying it's more a lack of skills and understanding than laziness, though laziness certainly plays a role.

Follow-up On a Tune In: KJIL Morning Show with Mike Leskes

Mike Leskes, of KJIL radio, interviewed Safe Internet Alliance's president Linda Criddle on the potential risks of using social networking sites and online classified ads. Mike raised particular concern over the shifting Privacy Policies and Terms and Conditions of Facebook whose multiple changes in just the last 5 months have reset consumers privacy settings to public, and announced they will be selling users information to 3rd parties, and asked what consumers should do to protect themselves in these situations.

Randy Renshaw of KSCJ radio interviewed Safe Internet Alliance's president Linda Criddle on the FCC's shift in positioning around net neutrality, and the FTC's broadband plan. Fielding questions from listeners who voiced strong support either for or against net neutrality, Linda acknowledged concerns on both sides of both issues, letting listeners understand that the Alliance has members on both sides of the debate.
