The Experts’ Take on the New Online Demographics
Yesterday we hosted our third podcast on Internet safety, “The New Online Demographics: What the Numbers Mean for Providers, Advertisers and Safety." During the podcast, our panel discussed different perspectives on a broad question:
What does increased Internet use and changing online demographics mean for consumers and those interested in online security and safety?
One example from research on this topic is a Pew Internet & American Life Project survey that shows an increase in the number of teens that access the Internet through mobile devices. Though mobile devices’ Internet connections tend to have more online security - because of the extra precautions cell phone providers take - they often don’t provide parental control options the way computers do and therefore pose a higher threat to the online safety of teens. A rational conclusion therefore is that as companies continue to create mobile devices that appeal to the young consumer by offering the same software capabilities as computers, they should also offer the same safety measures on those devices.
