FOSI and Womble Carlyle: Wednesdays with Winston
On June 24th, Safe Internet went to the 2nd Wednesdays with Winston program hosted by Family Online Safety Institute and Womble Carlyle. Each event is different but all of them aim to discuss what's happening in online safety at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Yesterday’s discussion centered around the implementation of the Child Safe Viewing Act and the examination of Parental Control Technologies for Video or Audio Programming.
Representatives from the FCC, CTIA, Verizon, Google and Yahoo (among others) were all in attendance. With such a variety it’s not surprising that differences in opinion rose. Some particularly interesting food for thought from the discussions (that we’d really love to hear your thoughts on) are:
- Is it or is it not any one organization’s place to mandate and implement the educational programs/systems needed to educate children, parents, and educators about online safety? How do you determine that?
- Currently parental control options for wireless devices are not free of charge...should they be? Why or why not?
- Just like with regulating industries what is the appropriate amount of blocking or filtering for children? When does it cross the line of the 1st amendment? When does it turn into a company controlling an industry? Which groups (corporate, governmental, non-profit) should have the most control in this arena? Or should individuals have the most control?
Awesome post!
